The subject of Dominika Slavická’s diploma is the present-day environmental crisis. However, the artist inspects it more widely – as the crisis of our relation to the planet Earth. She thinks the solution cannot be any technological miracle, for that would not eliminate its causes, but instead, a thorough spiritual transformation of humankind. The first part of her diploma is about The Black Madonna sculpture – the magical symbol representing continuity reaching as far back as to the cults of the goddess Isis and the Mother of Earth. The second part is an author’s book fusing mutually interconnected textual and visual components. The first pursues subjects related to the realization of the current condition, such as the awakening, sorrow, and repentance. The second follows up by positive seeking hope, based on the return to wildness and on realizing the sanctity of the natural world.
