Hana Süssová found the subject of her diploma in the evangelic congregation, which is decisive for her spiritual life. She observes everyday problems of women, especially those related to marriage, raising children and old age, from the perspective of Christian faith. It all started with a peculiar situation when the artist witnessed a woman receiving a gift – a wedding veil – from another. This event inspired her to photograph, and subsequently also paint, women of various ages in the attire. She thus subjected them to a slightly absurd situation which, however, had a symbolic meaning. It is because Süssová’s work deals with the parable of the Bride of Christ, employing it to find not only the spiritual but also intimately physical dimension in the featured women, meaning their grace and femininity, intrinsic to them in any period of life. The accompaniment to the definitive paintings is a series of small-dimensional works executed by finger painting on paper. These scenes describe the fate of women in present-day society and the ways how they cope with their situation. They are less realistic but instead, to some extent, deal with overstatement and irony.
