Annotation

Panáček’s subtle, realistic drawings, featuring naked men, women and children amid Nature, add yet another layer to the ancient utopia about the primordial idyllic state of mankind unspoiled by civilization. They distinguish on a personal facet since the artist is an active naturist and projects himself into a male protagonist of his works. This, along with their general tune, links them with the prints by Max Švabinský, especially the cycle Elysian Sonate. However, the series contains multiple references to art history: for instance, one of the large-dimensional drawings is a present-day edition of the traditional iconographic motif of a nymph abducted by a Faun, which can not only be found in Baroque painting but also, again, in the Švabinský’s interpretation from the 1930s.
